Build Summary

This children's chair was fabricated from 18 mm raw MDF using a 6 mm end mill. The complete cutting process was finished in approximately 10 minutes on a CNC router. The design consists of only four interlocking parts: two vertical side supports, a seat panel, and a backrest panel. Thanks to its slot-fit construction, assembly requires no complex hardware and can typically be completed in less than two minutes. The project was designed as a simple, efficient, and beginner-friendly CNC furniture piece that demonstrates the advantages of flat-pack and interlocking fabrication techniques.

Fabrication Notes

The connection slots were designed with a 0.3 mm clearance tolerance. This value is generally sufficient for unfinished material or for projects receiving only a thin clear varnish finish. If a primer and paint system will be applied, increasing the slot clearances through an offset adjustment is recommended. Additional coating thickness can reduce assembly tolerances and create excessively tight joints. When manufacturing with MDF, surface finishing should be applied shortly after fabrication. Depending on local humidity conditions, raw MDF may absorb moisture and swell over time, which can negatively affect the fit of interlocking joints. For plywood production, material thickness should always be verified using calipers before machining. Nominal 18 mm plywood sheets often vary from their stated thickness and may measure 18.2 mm or more. Adjusting slot dimensions with an appropriate offset prior to cutting will ensure proper assembly and fit.
