Project Update – Parametric Wall Art B-1

Build Summary

I recently completed a major revision of the Parametric Wall Art B-1 project. Following the first physical prototype and assembly tests, I decided to redesign several key components of the project from the ground up. The primary goal was to reduce material consumption while creating a cleaner, more refined, and structurally stronger design. The result is a more efficient project with fewer parts, lower material requirements, and a simplified mounting system.

Fabrication Notes

1. Reduced Overall Depth In the original version, the fish forms projected significantly from the wall. After producing the first prototype, I felt that the depth was visually excessive and made the overall composition appear bulkier than intended. To improve the proportions, I reduced the overall depth of the fish structures by approximately 50%. This modification not only created a more elegant appearance but also reduced the amount of material required for production. 2. Redesigned Mounting System The original design used two separate rear mounting plates for each fish. These plates were stacked together and fixed to the wall. The vertical ribs were then attached using hook-style connections that engaged with slots in the mounting plates, creating a mechanism similar to a French cleat system. While functional, the system required a considerable amount of additional material. For the new version, I completely redesigned the mounting method. Each fish now uses a single rear mounting plate. Instead of hook-style connections, pocketed slots are machined directly into the plate. The vertical ribs are inserted into these pockets and permanently secured with adhesive during assembly. This approach significantly simplifies the construction while producing a more rigid and integrated structure. Results The updated version provides several advantages: More refined and balanced proportions Stronger and more rigid overall construction Simplified assembly process Lower production costs Reduced material consumption The most significant improvement is material efficiency. The previous Large version required two full 1220 × 2440 mm sheets. After the redesign, the entire project can now be produced from a single 1220 × 2440 mm sheet. This represents approximately a 50% reduction in sheet material usage. Parametric Wall Art B-1 is available in Small, Medium, and Large versions, with both metric (mm) and imperial (inch) fabrication packages included.
