Fresh off the CNC: Parametric Bench A-7 | 1-Hour Cut Time, Sculptural Look

The photo shows the Parametric Bench A-7 model we just finished in the shop. My goal was to create not just a functional piece of furniture, but a sculptural aesthetic that stands out even in luxury spaces.

I kept the assembly logic highly practical; no messy glue-ups or complex hidden screws—you just stack the layers using threaded rods and nuts.

Quick Tech Notes:

  • Material & Thickness: I designed this for 12mm (1/2") material. It works beautifully with raw MDF, veneered MDF, solid wood, or plywood. It's also very suitable for painting. (You can also cut it using 18mm / 3/4" material; the overall depth of the bench will just increase slightly).

  • Production Time: Takes about 1 hour of cut time on the CNC.

  • Dimensions & Nesting: I prepared the files in 3 different sizes (Small, Medium, Large) and included both Metric (MM) and Imperial (Inch) versions so makers around the world can easily cut it. The one in the photo is the Large version, nested on 4 standard sheets (1220x2440mm / 48x96").

We recently shared the first prototype photos of our new Parametric Wall Shelf A-1 on Reddit, and frankly, the response was overwhelming! In a very short time, the post reached over 101,000 views, 330+ upvotes, and dozens of engaging comments.

Seeing this design evolve from a digital algorithm into a physical form—and receiving such positive feedback from the community—has been an incredible journey. Today, we want to dive deeper into the design process and explain how you can bring this piece into your own space.

Step-by-Step Production

You don't need master-level carpentry skills to produce this shelf. A standard CNC Router is more than enough.

  1. Cutting: The files are provided in ready-to-use nesting pages to minimize material waste. Simply load your MDF sheet onto the CNC and start cutting.

  2. Surface Finishing (Primer & Paint): A quality primer followed by a topcoat in your color of choice will give it that premium, smooth look. As seen in our prototype, dark tones like anthracite or charcoal grey highlight the shadow play beautifully.

  3. Assembly: Assemble the pieces in the designated order. Thanks to precise engineering, the parts fit together seamlessly.

Digital to physical! The first prototype of this piece is finally assembled in the shop.

I optimized this design for a zero-headache assembly. Parts fit perfectly right off the machine on the first try. Zero errors.
MDF thickness is 18mm. The interlocking slot gaps are set to 18.4mm
Note to self: It’s perfect as-is, but if I’m going to apply primer + paint, I need to increase the cutting offset tolerance in the software by an extra 0.2-0.3mm. So, making the slots around 18.8-19mm would be ideal to compensate for the paint thickness.

Parametric Wall Shelf A-1

The first prototype of our new parametric wall shelf is successfully assembled in the workshop. The natural shadow play and the organic flow of the structural ribs turned out exactly as engineered. Precision CNC cutting meets raw material.
